Students in classroom, learning english and business skills, Nigeria

Support the underprivileged adults who never got the chance to go to school to learn English and professionals skills.

EDUCATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

We support underprivileged adults who didn´t have a chance to go to school to learn the English language and professional skills. Newly acquired knowledge helps them to improve their economic status.

Action10 runs the program with our partner SpellAfrica, the organization focused on improving the poor state of literacy and education across Africa.

THE CHALLENGE OF ILLITERACY

Illiteracy is a major concern in Nigeria. Some 40 million adults are illiterate, while the overall literacy rate is only 57%, with huge variations between different states. Approximately 7 million children are completely out of school and education.

SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF ILLITERACY

The Back2School Initiative is addressing the problem of adult illiteracy and poor knowledge of English in Nigeria. The initiative targets adults between ages 24 and 45. It attracts them to return to school to improve their English skills. By taking evening classes, their job prospects increase, and they can take advantage of the country’s fast economic growth.

The classes are taught by qualified and enthusiastic teachers. They use the Montessori teaching method, an educational approach characterized by an emphasis on respecting the individual’s learning needs.

RESULTS OF BACK2SCHOOL INITIATIVE

So far, more than 1000 adults were taught to read and write in English. With newly achieved literacy skills, these people can own bank accounts, make bank transactions, start and scale their small businesses. They can get better jobs and even enroll in college.

USER-DRIVEN PROGRAM, ACCOUNTABILITY MANAGEMENT, AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY

All Action10 programs are user-driven. It means that the partners and local social entrepreneurs ideate, initiate, and manage the program.

Accountability management is one of our ActionAreas. We offer this service to our loan takers and partners. Read more about how we work regarding accountability management and sustainable economy on Human Rights & Science website.
